User Roles and Renaissance Applications
When personnel users are added to Renaissance software, either manually, by import, or through Custom Data Integration (CDI), they are placed in one of six permission groups:
- School Network Level Administrator
- School Network Dashboard Owner
- School Network Staff
- School Level Administrator
- School Staff
- Teacher
These roles are used for most Star apps, Accelerated Reader, and Renaissance Reports. However, some Renaissance apps have a different set of user roles, so they choose appropriate roles for each user based on their Renaissance Permission group. This table shows how user roles are transferred for these apps:
Renaissance User Role |
Role in Freckle1 | Role in myON2 |
---|---|---|
School Network Level Administrator | Administrator | Group Administrator |
School Network Dashboard Owner | No access | No access |
School Network Staff | Administrator | No access |
School Administrator | Administrator | School Administrator |
School Staff | Administrator | Teacher |
Teacher | Teacher | Teacher |
1. In Freckle, administrators cannot assign assignments to students unless they are assigned to classes, though they can impersonate a teacher. Administrators can use the administrator dashboard. Teachers can assign assignments and access their classes. Although teachers can only be assigned to one school, they will see their students from all schools.
2. See Roles in myON. Note that school administrators can only be assigned to one school in myON. Teachers can only be assigned to one school, but they can have any student in the group assigned to their myON roster.
How Classes/Courses and Calendars Are Handled in Various Renaissance Apps
Classes and calendars are managed differently across various Renaissance apps, but the information is shared if you log in to these apps through the Renaissance Home page.
Classes and Courses
The school network and schools are shared across all Renaissance apps. However, class and course information information is sometimes handled differently:
- Courses are not used by Freckle or myON.
- Classes are handled differently in Freckle and myON:
- In Freckle, students see the teacher name, not the class name. Teachers see their classes on their Freckle home page.
- myON does not use Renaissance classes; instead, students are combined into one class per teacher. Students who are enrolled in Renaissance classes with more than one teacher will be in each of the teacher's classes in myON; for myON assignments, note that only the teacher who assigns an assignment can see the students' progress on that assignment.
Timing of Shared Rostering
For Freckle and myON, changes to class information are available the next day (after the overnight sync), so a change made to a class one day would appear in those apps the next day.
School Calendars
The school year is shared across most Renaissance apps, including Accelerated Reader, Star apps, and Freckle. However, in myON, the annual school year start date (July 1 by default) is set by the Group Administrator in the account options.
Other App Differences
Email Verification
For personnel (teachers, staff, and administrators), an email address is required for each user. When personnel users open Freckle for the first time, they may be asked to verify their email address.
Other Renaissance Features
Freckle and myON do not observe the following Renaissance features:
- Subscriptions and capacity are handled differently.
- Renaissance preferences do not apply.
- Data editing restrictions and IP restrictions set up in Renaissance do not apply.
